A deck looks like a simple project from the driveway: some posts, some joists, a run of boards. Choosing a decking material
Pressure-treated lumber is still the most common decking material we install, and for good reason: it's affordable, it's readily available, and when properly maintained with periodic sealing or staining, it holds up well through Hudson Valley winters. It does need that upkeep, though. Skip the sealing and a pressure-treated deck will gray, check, and eventually splinter faster than it should.
Composite decking, sold under brands like Trex and TimberTech, costs more upfront but doesn't need staining or sealing, resists rot and insects completely since there's no wood fiber exposed to the weather, and holds its color and finish for a long time. It performs well in our freeze-thaw cycles since it doesn't absorb water the way wood does. The tradeoff, besides cost, is that it can get noticeably hot underfoot in direct summer sun and the color and texture options, while extensive, are limited compared to what you can do with real wood.
Cedar and other naturally rot-resistant woods sit between the two, prized for their look and natural insect resistance, but they cost more than pressure-treated lumber and still need regular sealing to look their best and resist our winters long-term. Footings: the part nobody sees
The single most important structural detail on any deck in our region is footing depth. Ground in the Hudson Valley freezes deep enough in a hard winter that a footing poured too shallow will heave as the frozen soil expands, and once a footing moves, the whole structure above it goes out of level and out of plumb. The ledger board: where most deck failures start

Stairs need consistent rise and run from top to bottom, since an inconsistent step is one of the most common trip hazards in a home. These aren't places to cut corners for a cheaper build.
