About Walden, Orange County
Walden is a village in the Town of Montgomery, Orange County, incorporated in 1855. It takes its name from Jacob T. Walden, a New York City entrepreneur who began buying land along the Wallkill River in 1813 to harness the water power of its falls for a manufacturing settlement. By the 1820s his mill was producing cotton and woolen cloth, and by the 1840s Walden had become a major woolen manufacturing center in Orange County.
In 1856 the New York Knife Company moved into the idle cotton factory, and Walden earned the nickname "Little Sheffield" as it grew into a center of American cutlery production, an industry that lasted until Schrade cutlery relocated to Ellenville in the 1950s. The Wallkill River remains the village's dominant feature today, with its waterfalls, dams, and bridges, along with the Tin Brook tributary that flows through the village near its mouth.
